In conjunction with the Texas Chief Deputies
Association’s Annual Training Conference, scheduled for June 17th
- 20th,
2008, in Kerville, Texas; Melvin Drum Memorial Scholarships.
The first three (academic) scholarships mentioned are
$1,000.00, payable $500.00 this year in June and another
$500.00 next year upon proof of continued enrollment. The final
scholarship available to a Sheriff's Office employee is $750.00 and
will be paid in one payment at the June conference.
Three of the scholarships are available
to any son, daughter, stepson or stepdaughter of any Sheriff’s
Office Employee, working for a Sheriff’s Office in the State of
Texas
. The recipients are required to attend a College, University
or Trade School within the State of
Texas
.
One of the scholarships is available to
a
Texas
licensed peace officer, currently working in law enforcement in the
State of
Texas
, attending an accredited college in
Texas
, and is working toward a degree plan.

Who is Melvin Drum?
Chief Deputy Melvin
Drum went to work for the Ochiltree County Sheriff’s Office in 1979.
On August 8, 1980, he was promoted to Chief Deputy by Sheriff Joe
Hataway.
On March 28, 1987,
Chief Deputy Drum responded to a domestic violence call at
approximately 1:00 p.m.. While in route to the residence Chief
Deputy Drum observed the suspect and his wife/victim in a 1975 Ford.
Chief Deputy Drum stopped the vehicle and before he could exit his
patrol unit the suspect exited his car and fatally shot Chief Drum
through the patrol car window.
Chief Deputy Drum was
known for his love of people and for his devotion to law
enforcement. The scholarships and awards given are in memory of
Chief Deputy Drum. |
